Grade 0

5 – 6 Years

Grade 0 is our first year of the Foundation Phase.

It is vitally important that we ready the children for their next phase of schooling and their future. We do this through methods that allow them to explore, discover, create, and wonder about the world around them. Their day is structured around activities that are set out by the teachers.

If this Grade is completed successfully children can easily move to The King’s College and Preparatory. Our Grade 0 teachers have a close relationship with the Grade 1 teachers at the King’s College and Preparatory school. The Grade 0’s go on a little outing to the tuck shop at the school and spend half a morning with the grade 1 children and teachers in their classroom towards the end of the year. By the time your child moves into grade 1, they will be placed with the teacher that is most suited to them, their personality as well as their needs. The Grade 1 teachers also pay a visit to the Grade 0 classrooms to help the children become more familiar with them. Having happy children is very important to us and we care deeply for paving a road of success for your child, including an easy transition into ‘big school’.

FAQ

Yes, towards the end of the year, at the beginning of the 3rd term.

Through the course of the Grade 0 year we have a curriculum that prepares the learners for Grade One formal schooling. This means that Grade 0 is a vital year and the year to ensure that learners are developmentally ready for the challenges of learning to read and write. For this reason we have chosen to do a standardized school readiness assessment with the learners. The assessment checks if the learners are adequately mature in the areas of social/emotional, auditory processing, visual processing, spatial/number, fine and gross motor. These concepts are great indicators of how a learner will handle the Grade One syllabus. The purpose of the assessment is not to pass or fail learners but rather to identify areas that require improvement and to support the learners in a way that ensures we can say with confidence that they are school ready.

The Kings Preparatory and College is our feeder school. The grade 0 children would transition into Grade 1 and enrolment and registration fees apply.
